Sudoku Tips and Tricks: What to Do When You Are Stuck

Everyone gets stuck in Sudoku. The grid stops giving up digits, the same three cells keep pulling your eye, and guessing starts to look tempting. The good news is that being stuck is almost always a scanning problem rather than a logic problem: the next move exists, you just have not looked at it from the right angle. These Sudoku tips are ordered from the quickest check to the deepest, so work down the list until the board moves again.

Sudoku tips when you are stuck

  1. Change the question. If you have been asking "what fits in this cell?", switch to "where can this digit go?" and sweep one digit through all nine boxes. The two questions find different singles.
  2. Count the digits. Tap a placed digit to highlight every copy of it. A digit that appears seven or eight times has one or two homes left, and they are usually forced.
  3. Re-scan what you just changed. The last few placements altered a row, a column and a box each. Those units are where new singles appear, not the corner you have been staring at.
  4. Fill notes for the emptiest boxes. Do not annotate the whole grid at once; write complete candidates for the two or three sparsest boxes, then look for cells with a single note and digits that appear in only one cell of a unit.
  5. Look for locked candidates. A digit whose notes inside a box all sit on one row cannot appear elsewhere in that row. This single elimination often restarts a stalled Hard or Expert board.
  6. Hunt for pairs. Two cells in a unit with the same two candidates lock those digits; erase them from the unit's other cells. Then check for hidden pairs, two digits confined to two cells.
  7. Go up a level in technique. If pairs and locked candidates have been exhausted, the board wants an X-Wing or XY-Wing. Our techniques guide shows what to look for.
  8. Take a hint, deliberately. Three are available per puzzle. Use one when a single placement would open a whole region, and treat the revealed digit as a clue about which technique you missed.

Tips for beginners

If you are new, read how to play Sudoku first, then stay on Easy until you can finish without hints. Do not use notes on Easy boards; learn to see singles directly. Move up when a level feels routine rather than when it feels possible.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do when I am stuck in Sudoku?

Switch from asking what fits in a cell to asking where a digit can go, re-scan the units you changed most recently, then turn on notes for the emptiest boxes and look for cells with one candidate or digits with one possible cell.

Can Sudoku be solved without guessing?

Yes, if the puzzle is properly constructed. Every board on this site is verified to have exactly one solution reachable by logic, so a deduction is always available even when it is hard to see.

Is it cheating to use notes in Sudoku?

No. Pencil marks are part of the game and are how experienced players solve hard puzzles. Notes record what you have already deduced; they do not solve anything for you.

How do I get faster at Sudoku?

Scan in a fixed order, start with the most frequent digit, use keyboard input on desktop, and place digits as soon as you see them. Speed comes from routine, not from thinking harder.
