How to print Sudoku puzzles or save them as a PDF
- Choose a level from Easy to Extreme. They are the same levels you play online, so a printed Hard puzzle is as hard as an online one.
- Choose 1, 2, 4 or 6 puzzles per page and up to 10 pages.
- Pick Letter or A4 to match your paper.
- Press Print or save as PDF. In the print window, choose your printer, or choose Save as PDF as the destination to keep a file you can print later or send to someone.
If the printout shows the web address and the date along the edges, turn off Headers and footers in the print window’s settings. The sheets already carry their own page numbers.
Which layout to choose
| Per page | Grid width on Letter | Grid width on A4 | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6.75 in (17.1 cm) | 166 mm | Large print, and the most room for pencil marks |
| 2 | 4.05 in (10.3 cm) | 100 mm | Comfortable writing with space around each grid |
| 4 | 3.38 in (8.6 cm) | 83 mm | A balance of size and number |
| 6 | 2.55 in (6.5 cm) | 63 mm | A booklet for a trip or a class set; best for Easy and Medium, where you rarely need notes |
The harder the level, the bigger the grid you will want: Expert, Master and Extreme puzzles are solved with candidates written in the corners of the cells, and that is easier with 1 or 2 to a page.
Which level to print
Easy puzzles can be finished by scanning alone and suit beginners and children. Medium needs hidden singles, and Hard has fewer clues but the same kind of logic. From Expert up you will need notes. The difficulty levels guide lists the clues and techniques for each level.
Every puzzle here is a standard 9×9 grid; there are no 4×4 or 6×6 mini puzzles yet. For a younger child, start with Easy at 1 or 2 to a page.
Every puzzle is new and has one solution
The puzzles are made in your browser by the same generator as the online game: it fills a random grid, removes numbers one at a time as long as only one solution remains, and then checks which solving techniques the puzzle needs before it accepts it for a level. Nothing is sent to a server and the puzzles are not stored, so if you want the same set again, save it as a PDF. Press New puzzles for a different set.
Answer pages
With Answer pages at the end ticked, the solutions follow the puzzles, six to a page and numbered to match. The printed clues are in bold and the other digits in grey, so you can check one cell without reading the whole grid. Untick it to print a set without answers, for a class or a family contest.
Solving on paper
- Use a pencil. On paper there is no undo, and the harder levels need candidates that you will rub out.
- Write candidates small, in the same corner of the cell for each digit (1 top left, 9 bottom right), so you can read a cell at a glance.
- New to the game? Start with how to play Sudoku. Stuck on a printed puzzle? The techniques guide and tips for when you are stuck work just as well on paper.
Frequently asked questions
Are these printable Sudoku puzzles free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit beyond 10 pages at a time; press New puzzles for another set. Each sheet carries only the site name and a page number at the bottom.
Can I save the puzzles as a PDF?
Yes. Press Print or save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print window. The PDF keeps the layout and paper size you picked.
Do the printable Sudoku puzzles come with answers?
Yes. Answer pages are added at the end, six solutions to a page, numbered to match the puzzles. Untick Answer pages at the end to leave them out.
Is there a large print Sudoku?
Choose 1 puzzle per page. The grid is then 6.75 inches (17.1 cm) wide on Letter paper and 166 mm wide on A4.
How many Sudoku puzzles can I print at once?
Up to 60: 10 pages with 6 puzzles each. Every puzzle in a set is different, and a new set is made each time you press New puzzles or reload the page.
Are the printed puzzles as hard as the online ones?
Yes. They come from the same generator and are graded the same way, so a printed Expert puzzle needs the same techniques as an online Expert puzzle.
