How to use the voice recorder
- Press Record and allow the microphone when the browser asks. Recording starts straight away.
- Use Pause to take a break without starting a new file, and Stop when you are done.
- Play the recording back from the list, then download it.
Each time you press Record you get a new take, and all of them stay in the list until you close the page. The meter shows your level as you record: keep your voice out of the red.
Downloading your recordings
Every take has two download buttons:
- The browser’s own format: WebM with Opus audio in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, or M4A in Safari. The files are small, around a megabyte a minute or less, and play in browsers and in most modern media players.
- WAV: uncompressed, so it opens in every audio editor and player, but it is much bigger, several megabytes a minute.
Recordings only exist in this page. The browser warns you if you try to leave with a recording you have not downloaded, but download anything you want to keep before closing the tab.
Noise suppression
Turn on Noise suppression before you record to let the browser clean up the sound. It switches on the browser’s built-in noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic volume, the same tools used for calls. They work best on steady noise such as a fan or a hum. For a clean, natural recording in a quiet room, leave them off.
Tips for a better recording
- Record in the quietest room you have. Soft furnishings, curtains and carpet cut down echo.
- Keep a steady distance from the microphone, and speak across it rather than straight into it, so your breath does not thump.
- Do a short test take first and check the level: peaks between about −18 and −6 dB are comfortable.
- Close other apps that might use the microphone, and silence notifications.
Is it private?
Yes. Recording happens inside the browser and nothing is uploaded: there is no account and no server copy. When you close the page, recordings you have not downloaded are gone.
To check the microphone first, use the mic test.
